THE ‘FIFTH SKILL’ – intercultural awareness
In this time of international migration, tourism, communication, business and education, it’s useful for learners to be aware of intercultural differences, to reflect on their own culture and to exchange viewpoints with each other. The course materials we choose – or design ourselves – can help them communicate more effectively in English and minimise misunderstandings in cross-cultural situations. In this workshop, we’ll examine why certain content may be sensitive in various cultures, consider a framework for selecting or designing materials, and look at ways of teaching and encouraging intercultural awareness in the English language classroom. Due to its popularity at the ETAS AGM this January, we have decided to offer this session again to people who have not yet had the opportunity to see it.

Making Sense of Lexis: presenting real language at higher levels
Learners of English in this fast-paced, competitive world need language that has a high surrender value – that is, expressions they can pick up and immediately begin to use in a variety of communicative contexts. Language which meets this requirement includes collocations, fixed expressions, semi-fixed expressions and lexical patterns – all of them essential for helping learners progress beyond an intermediate (B1) level. These chunks of language can seem awkward to handle compared with single words and many grammatical structures. We’ll therefore look at practical ideas for how to select, present and meaningfully practise this kind of language.
